Salicylanilides are a group of compounds with a wide spectrum of biological effects. They have found their use as anthelmintic agents and are still being studied for their other anti-infective effects, however, recently they have become the subject of a number of studies due to their promising anticancer activity. So far, diverse types of mechanisms of their anticancer effects have been described, yet these mechanisms are still not fully elucidated. Inhibition of a number of signaling cascades has been confirmed (e.g. inhibition of STAT3 phosphorylation), however, some studies indicate another different mechanism of action, which consists in interfering with mitochondrial function. The goal of this project is to characterize the action of these compounds at the level of mitochondria in selected tumor cells, and at the same time to contribute to a better identification of the mechanisms of the antitumor action of salicylanilide derivatives.
